Artist Statement

Play and invention are often the starting points of my practice. I primarily use memory but also source materials referencing technology, architecture and popular culture. Similar to a game, I construct shapes through drawing and painting creating my own dream spaces and objects. These spaces and objects symbolise personal narratives which are intertwined with the experience of the city, the bombardment of speed and technology.

Sometimes they are humorous due to their playful aesthetic. Often they are clunky and fragile never being able to function. They originate from sources derived from modernist ideals concerning play and objects that assist humans in a temporary, placeless world. However the work conjures up dystopian feelings where the objects or spaces seem to be under attack and need protection. I enjoy this conflict between ideas and realisation but also the friction of falling in and out of personal dreamscapes.
